I understand from the Secretary of State
for the Colonies that you will have received from the
Foreign Office instructions to take any opportunity
which may occur of representing to the Chinese
Authorities the interest of this Government in the
rehabilitation of the Chinese Section of the Canton-

to forward the enclosed copy of a document entitled
"Rehabilitation of the Canton-Kowloon Railway"
received by me on the 7th instant from 'r. J.H. Choy,
of the Chinese Ministry of lailways.
2. In the opinion of this Government the most
urgent and important requirements for the rehabilitation
of the Chinese Section of this railway are :-
(1) Three new express locomotives.
(ii) Ten or twelve new coaches.
(iii) 40,000 to 80,000 new sleepers.
3. With regard to item (i), angreement has
already been entered into between the 'ong Kong
Government and the Provincial Government of Kwangtung,
for the purchase of these new locomotives by the
Hong Kong Government at an approximate cost of
is Britannic Majesty's Minister,
$330,000.
